Choosing Your Wedding Invitations
When compiling your wedding budget, please do keep all your printed items in mind! Printing Save the Dates, Invitations, Direction cards, Reception cards, RSVP cards, Menus, Programs, Escort Cards / Place cards, Thank You Notes does add up, so make sure you've left some room in the budget for them all.
Keep in mind that the first bit of insight into the wedding that your guests will encounter is your Save the Date or Invitation. It sets the tone for the actual wedding and gives your guests a glimpse into the style/theme of the wedding. Whatever you've thought up for the printed items that get mailed, remember to keep the same style/tone in the printed items to be used on the wedding day.
Whether you prefer custom or pre-designed items, there are literally 1000s of choices to choose from! Cruise around the web looking at different stationers sites and save images (or clip from mag's) of materials, styles, wording, ideas that you love. Bring all of these with you when you meet with a stationer ~ it gives them great insight into what you are looking to create. Once you've picked a stationer or stationery company to work with, be honest with your feedback.
Lastly, keep in mind that you'll need to put postage on your Save the Dates and Invitation Suites + postage on your RSVP cards (this is a non negotiable {sorry} it must be done!) ~ these costs certainly do add up, so keep in mind when you are designing the size and weight of your suites.

The Importance of Thank You Notes
If anyone ever tells you that thank you notes can be sent via email - immediately cease communication with this person! A Thank You note is a timeless tradition that needs to be handwritten and actually taken to the post office or post box and mailed. I'm pretty old school about this, so bare with me.
One of the first things you should purchase once you've gotten engaged is thank you notes. You are going to need them. If at first they don't match the rest of your invitation suite, don't fret, you can get matching ones later. It's more important to have a nice card stock that you can handwrite on early on in this wedding planning process because people will be giving you gifts, parties or generally doing nice things for you that desrved to be recognized and thanked. While different rules of etiquette apply to the wedding thank you note ~ here are my rules of thumb:
It doesn't need to be an eloquent novel, address whomever purchased the gift, say thank you, include a note on how you'll use it and sign. And regarding when to send them out: ASAP. I find that thank you notes are oft forgotten the longer time passes so instead of waiting for three months ~ sit down once a week and get them done.

Fabulous Fridays: Educating Yourself
The weather here in NYC is finally beginning to act spring like which makes me beyond happy! The cold dreary days were reminding me of when I lived in London and while I love London, the weather was a bit depressive at times.
I had the opportunity to meet Kelli Parker, the genius behind A Deux Bridal - a bespoke stationery company up in Boston a few months ago and she's been writing an awesome series on custom invitations for weddings - its informative & educational and you have to check out Parts I, II and III immediately.
What lovely finds have you come across this week?

Wediquette: Inner and Outer Envelopes
It makes sense to list everyone's name specifically on the inner envelope, but we don't have one. Could I list names on the RSVP envelope? Or should I list everyone's names on the outer mailing envelope? That would mean several lines on the outer envelope?? What do we do as we don't want guests to think that their entire household is invited!
It used to be the norm that wedding invitations came in two envelopes, and outer and an inner. The outer one held the head of the household names "Mr & Mrs" and the address, while the inner envelope listed the individual names of the invited {so basically, the kids}. These days, its very common to forgo the inner envelope to save costs, save paper, save on calligraphy - which means where do all the names go?
On the outer envelope. If you want to be casual about it - and you are inviting all the children in that household, you can always do "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Family" as your first line. Or, if you'd like something more formal, name each child, which I know can clutter up the envelope but it would look like "Mr. and Mrs. John Smith and Miss. Chloe Smith". If you are hiring a calligrapher for your envelopes, find someone who prices per envelope, not per line ~ they will be able to advise you on the best protocol and layout for including all the additional names so the envelope doesn't look too full.

Going Postal ...
Just a friendly reminder that today the postage increases on standard 1st Class Stamps. It increases from 42¢ to 44¢, and ps: all other postage increases too.
If you're sending out invites with RSVP return dates later than today, make sure you have the increased postage on the return envelopes. The only stamps that are staying the same (i.e. no additional postage needed) are the FOREVER stamps for 1 ounce envelopes. So if you've got those, stamps away!
For more information, check out the USPS website.
